When You Created Me, What Were You Thinking?
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
I was asked that question my whole childhood. I don’t recall ever really having an answer. At least not one that felt “right”. Soon, I found myself as an adult and still faced with that same unanswered question.
My earnest prayer had become, “Lord, what is my purpose?” I mean, I know as followers of Jesus, that our purpose is to love and honor God. We’re called to do our part to expand God’s kingdom.
Let’s just say that I needed God to be more specific.
Some years ago, I watched a YouTube video ,where Kim Walker-Smith was describing an encounter she had with God. During her encounter, she asked God what He was thinking when He made her. God answered her question.
Oh, how I longed to hear God tell me what he was thinking when He created me. I’ve heard some people say that from an early age, they just knew what they wanted to be.
What about the people like me? People who find themselves as adults and still unsure of their calling.
Growing up, I had never been very passionate about anything to be quite honest. I had reached a point where I had to say,
I once heard a pastor explain our relationship with God like an owner’s manual. If we buy something new, and have no idea how to build or use it, we look to the owner’s manual (the creators of the device) for guidance.
This is the same way in which we should approach God. God is our creator.
The bible states that God knew us before we were formed in our mother’s womb. Our purpose is defined not by man, but by God. So, we must seek God in all of his infinite wisdom.
When I began to seek God about my purpose, I didn’t receive an answer right away. Years passed before I really began to get a glimpse into what God was calling me to do.
Don’t get caught up in the frustration of trying to figure everything out. Instead, just keep your eyes on Jesus.
In time, all will be revealed, and everything that you’ve gone through on your journey will begin to make sense.
God is not offended by our questions. He wants to tell us who we are, and reveal the things that He has placed on the inside of us, just as much as we may be longing to know.
So, don’t be afraid to ask him today.
Today’s Reading: Jeremiah 1:5; Luke 11:9
Jeremiah 1:5 (NLT) “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”
Luke 11:9 (NLT) “And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”
