College Life Lessons

ever thought?

“I want to go back to school, but I’m afraid.”

I’ve been out of school for so long, and I didn’t make the best grades in high school. College will be the same way.”

“I don’t know what career path to take, so I’ll just wait until I have everything figured out before I start.”

If you can be honest and say that you’ve ever said or thought any of these things, please keep reading…

I graduated from college on December 15, 2018, with a Bachelor of Science degree in leadership. A leadership degree was never on my to-do list.  Entering college, the only thing I knew for sure, is that I wanted to help people.

I honestly had no idea what that would look like.  I just knew something in me wanted more.  Although I appreciated my military experience, I knew it was time to close that chapter of my life.

I initially wanted to pursue a degree in psychology.  I figured since I was always giving my friends advice, that this would be perfect for me.  People would come to my huge office, lay on my couch, and tell me all of their problems.

In return, I would make their lives all better.  I mean, it worked for my friends, so surely it would work for them too, right?

After taking my first psychology class, I knew without a shadow of a doubt, that psychology was NOT for me.

At one point, I wanted to be an interior designer.  I already had tooons of experience from “HGTV University” (that’s when you think you have extensive design experience from always watching HGTV).  Needless to say, that didn’t work out.

After I received my Associate of Science degree in social sciences, I thought about ditching the bachelor’s degree, and going to cosmetology school.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I love hair!  At the time though, starting cosmetology school just wasn’t feasible.

So, I stuck it out and continued to pursue my bachelor’s degree as a business marketing major.  I’ll save all the details of those challenges for another post.  For now, let’s just say that major didn’t work out either.

I was now in my junior year.  I felt like I didn’t have my life anymore figured out, than when I first started.  I became so frustrated.

When my academic advisor recommended that I pursue a degree in leadership, the only thing I could think is, HERE WE GO AGAIN!

I started taking leadership courses, and I was so amazed.  Each assignment was helping me to understand more about myself.  Everything finally began to click!

I realized, that through my military experience, and my college journey, God was teaching me to be a leader.  It also helped me realize the passion I have to inspire others.  Out of that passion, Purposed to Inspire was birthed.

I shared all of this with you to hopefully dispel your worries and fears.  I’m guilty of thinking every thought at the top of this page.  If you have a passion to further your education, do it.

Don’t let you, stop you

You’re smarter than you think you are.  Please don’t let your past failures, setbacks, or challenges define you.  You got this!

You may not have everything figured out right now, and that’s ok. You don’t have to wait until you have everything figured out before you get started. Just start.
